16mm Film – Race Car Jalopy Derby 1949 – Home Movie! Rare.
This black and white reversal film is on a metal 400 foot reel and has approx 350 feet of silent footage, which appears to have been shot in 50 foot rolls. (all of the cement splices have been remade)
The film is in excellent condition and has no vinegar smell. The Kodak date code is 1948 (three dots) however the film was photographed around October or November of 1949, we know this from one of the headlines of a newspaper sitting on a desk. The film was made by the owners of
Rapton & Browne Photography
, it is one of these gentleman who's estate the reel was found in. There are some other scenes of what appear to be Long Beach California. One of the jalopy cars says:
A-1 Tire Company El Monte.
It has been suggested that this race track may be
Carrell's Speedway
which as you know became
Ascot Raceway in Gardena
. Perhaps one of the folks looking at this listing can help to identify it? Other names visible include:
Joseph & Boemler western auto supply company
. There is one down town street scene and some of the business including and where Rapton & Browne Photography was located then next to that was:
George's Shoe Repairing, Tea Garden Chop Suey Restaurant
, and
Gracci's Jewelers.
Searching on the internet I found nothing about any of these stores. The only sign on the race track itself appears on a building with the words Coca-Cola. I suspect this track may have been located in Long Beach, as in the distance in one shot, I believe you can see the old gasometer storage tank near signal hill, but not sure? There is one brief shot of some boats and the banks are lined with the old fashion oil derricks – and that looks like Long Beach for sure! There is one scene of a crash, the man gets out of his derby car, and stumbles to the center of the track and collapses – then the medical team arrives. It's some cool original footage that has never seen the light of a projector in recent times until last night when we ran the film for the first time since the owner stashed it away. So let's say there is a good 6 minutes of racing on the reel. This footage is rights free! Exploitable for stock footage sales! We have not, and would not make a copy! You will get the ONLY copy on earth!
