On May 9, 2016, the President signed a law making the American Bison the first National Mammal of the United States.
Bison were once kings of the Plains with as many as 30 million of these majestic beasts roaming North America.
But, as settlers increasingly migrated West, Bison were hunted to near extinction.
At the turn of the 19th century, strict conservation efforts were put in place to save them from oblivion.
Today, Bison herds have made an incredible comeback and once again roam
the Plains in protected park lands and private ranches throughout North America.
