    Description

This is a reproduction print of the Southern Railway's "The Florida Special". It was a train that connected Kansas City to Jacksonville and Miami and advertised itself as a one-change connection to the West. The route operated with the Frisco Railroad to St. Louis.
The Southern Railway was formed from 150 railroads that merged between 1847 and the next 100 years to create a rail network connecting the Southern states. By 1873, the emerging railroad already connected Atlanta to Washington DC and was critical for re-connecting the transport links of the Southern states to the Union after the destruction of the Civil War. This initial consolidated route was known as the Piedmont Air Line; By 1894 these consolidations came together under the financier, J.P. Morgan who created the original Southern Railroad. During the steam era, it featured some of the largest locomotives including its 2-8-8-2s that hauled heavy coal trains out of the Appalachian mountains. It was the first major railroad to switch from steam locomotives to diesel in 1953. The Southern Railway was a well-managed business and did not face bankruptcies or other financial challenges, but in 1982 it finally merged with the Norfolk and Western to create today's Norfolk Southern (NS).
This print is restored from the original and printed on matte cardstock photo paper which is acid-free and with Canon inks that are guaranteed for 100 years without fading.
The prints come in the frame size as specified with solid plastic trim with a glass cover. We package it to minimize the risk of damage. Please note that the watermark is visible only on website photos and it is not placed on our final poster prints.
